Preparing Homeschool Records for College

It's important to get your homeschooler's work organized in preparation for college admission. When you organize your homeschool high school records, it’s a good idea to have a folder, binder, or notebook with subject tabs for each subject area that you cover in your homeschool for placing any papers that you can scrounge up. Don't be paralyzed by indecision when it's something that crosses the curriculum and dips into two subject areas. It doesn’t really matter where you put it; what matters is that you DO save it!

The benefit of using a notebook with a subject tab is so you can easily figure out what subjects you don’t have records for. You won't necessarily know in advance what colleges are going to request for admission. Some colleges will want to see a lab write up from a lab class. Others will want to see a math paper or a math test just to see it in the student's own handwriting. One of the colleges that my son applied to wanted a graded English paper. I’ve talked to a lot of colleges who are very frustrated at the state of public education. Kids can go through FOUR YEARS of English classes and come to college without the ability to read or write! They will want to verify that your student CAN.

I wrote a course description for each of the classes we completed as we homeschooled high school. Each course description was about a paragraph long. I also listed the activities we did and the books or curriculum used, and wrote every possible way that I evaluated them at the bottom.

It’s important to note that the way you evaluate your children is not ALL about testing. Testing is a very small piece of how we evaluate our children. The kids in public or private schools are not solely evaluated on tests. When they go to school, they might be given a grade that’s based on a variety of things, including attendance, homework completion, and participation in class. If you as a homeschooler are only giving a grade based on each of the chapter tests, you’re putting your student at a disadvantage against every other grade in the state.

Homeschool Transcripts: Not So Scary After All

Guess what? A Homeschool Transcript is just a piece of paper that “makes noise” and has print in Times New Roman 12 font; it’s just a regular paper with no notary on it! There’s nothing scary about it and you CAN do this at home!

The thing you need to know about the transcript is that whenever you get around to making your child’s transcript, it will look good. Without a doubt, if you put it out in print, it will look good and you’ll be amazed that your child can look that good! The reason for this is that making a transcript is your chance to legally brag about your child! It’s your opportunity to express everything wonderful that they’ve ever done - things that you wouldn’t necessarily tell your friends because they might think that you are bragging.

Don’t Change Your Homeschool

The one thing that you need to know about transcripts is that they do look a bit foreign to us as homeschoolers. When I ask about your homeschool, you might talk about the visit to the pond, the nature study, and the great unit study that you’ve done together all about it. While these things can make up a wonderful education, they don’t make a lot of intuitive sense to colleges. Colleges think in terms of words and specific numbers. So you have to translate your wonderful homeschool work into the words and numbers that colleges understand.

What I don’t want you to do is to change your homeschool AT ALL. Do not change your homeschool because you begin homeschool at the high school level! You want to keep doing what you’re doing as long as it works. You’re going to translate that, not in German or Spanish, but into the love language of colleges that they’re going to understand. The Easy Way To Keep Homeschool Records

Keeping records becomes really important during homeschool high school, so here are a few easy steps to follow that will help you succeed, but not get overwhelmed with the tasks.

1. Work on your high school records a little at a time, and start out simply.  Get a box, put it somewhere out of the way, and put papers and homeschool information in the box. There are better (and fancier) ways to keep records, but this is a great place to start simply. Whatever you do, start somewhere!
2. Keep a homeschool calendar, and note important high school dates on it.  Things like taking tests (PSAT, SAT, ect), keeping track of activities, and tracking the time you spend on subjects can be easier when you use a calendar. You can find important test dates on the College Board website.
3. Review your student’s college plans with both your spouse and your student. Make sure everyone knows what the goals are, like four years of English, three or four of science, etc. Most colleges like to see 24 or more credits on a high school transcript, so check out their requirements and plan appropriately.
4. Make changes if you need to. If something isn’t working, think about how to make it better, or throw it out! Even if a curriculum worked with another child, it might not work with their sibling, and you might have to try something new. Don’t try to push a square peg into a round hole!
5. Start small with your transcript. You don’t have to make a complete transcript the first time you sit down to do so. Just try to list out course titles first, or create a template first.  Getting something down on paper will make you feel better, and you can come back later to continue working on it.
6. Make sure that you include all the things your student is learning on their transcript, including the things they learn on their own. If something your child does constantly makes you a little annoyed, it’s possible that that activity is their “delight” activity, the one they engage in without being made to, like playing piano, doing ballet, or programming on the computer. Just pay attention.
7. To project what your child’s SAT score might be before they take it (which is important so you can start to think about good fit colleges), take their PSAT results and add a zero. For instance, if they scored a 50 on the math section of the PSAT, they are likely to score a 500 on the math section of the SAT. 
8. Keep track of what your child is reading, and include that in your records. You can have your student do this, or you can do it. Colleges will want to see this list when you apply, so add it to your records.
9. There are lots of different ways to homeschool, and none of them is the only one right way. Colleges know this, so don’t worry and think you must change your homeschool to fit some ideal, or make it look like your best friend’s homeschool. Your children are unique, and so is your homeschool. Relax, and enjoy it!
